About me

Honorary Consul Monir Choudhury, a Chicagoan of twenty-seven years, hails from Sylhet, a northeastern district of Bangladesh. After completion of his secondary education, he pursued higher studies at the University of Chittagong. As an agriculturist, Consul Chowdhury undertook various professional training in Bangladesh and abroad.  Consul Choudhury served as a Sub-divisional Officer and District Superintendent for more than twelve years under the Ministry of Agriculture of Bangladesh
 
Consul Chowdhury actively participated in the students’ movement as well as mainstream political activities in Bangladesh since 1969.  As a member of Bangladesh Chatra League, the students’ front of Awami League, Consul Choudhury was directly involved in the Uprising of 1969 and subsequently took part in the Independence Movement of Bangladesh in 1971. 

Being raised in a well-respected and philanthropic family, Consul Choudhury developed a compassionate mindset that allowed him to promote a vision and mission aimed toward making a difference in the life of the people of his community and the society as a whole. He took many initiatives in expanding educational opportunities in the district of Sylhet. He was directly involved in establishing Kulaura College serving students in one of the largest sub-district under greater Sylhet. 

As a community leader, Consul Choudhury served as one of the Asian Advisory Council Members of the Secretary of State, Illinois. He served for two terms as President of Bangladesh Association of Greater Chicagoland (BAGC). As a leader of Bangladeshi Association, he initiated community activities to raise educational and cultural awareness. As a result of his pursuance on behalf of Bangladeshi community, the City of Chicago named a prominent street after Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (as Sheikh Mujib Way) and another one after the Bangladeshi Structural Engineer of the landmark building Sears Tower, F R Khan (as F R Khan Way). Consul Choudhury led in organizing Bangladesh Day Parade in Chicago.

As recognition for his outstanding contribution to Bangladeshi Community, Consul Choudhury received Asian American Coalition Award and the Award for Community Services from the Secretary of State Jessy White.

Consul Choudhury had the honor to receive an appointment as the Honorary Consul of Bangladesh in Illinois on July 17, 2014. The State Department of USA endorsed his position shortly after his acceptance.  Since then Consul Choudhury has been supporting the interests and legal entities of Bangladeshi Citizens in the State of Illinois.
